August 14, 2017 – Another Block Opens to Traffic

Progress on Main Street means more exciting updates! See below for the latest information on what to expect this week.

McDonald to Ashman

  • Now open to vehicle traffic and parking
  • Ashman from Main to Ann will be restricted to one lane for a few more weeks

Ashman to Gordon

  • Paving expected 8/23
  • Intersection of Main and Gordon expected to open by 8/24
  • *Tentative* opening date for Ashman to Gordon block is 8/31

Rodd to Cronkright

  • Work in these two blocks will happen together (Rodd to Townsend and Townsend to Cronkright)
  • Street milling expected to begin 8/24
  • Rodd and Townsend intersections expected to close to traffic beginning 8/24
    • At this time, McDonald, Ashman and Gordon will all be open to through traffic across Main Street
  • Tentative plan will leave Cronkright open to traffic turning east onto Main Street (westbound traffic will be prohibited)

July 24, 2017: Construction Update – Work Moves to a New Block

We’re nearly six weeks into the Dig In Midland streetscape project and construction continues to move along as previously anticipated. Our crews’ hard work gives us plenty of updates for you!

As of July 21, work has expanded into another block of Main Street from Gordon Street to Fitzhugh Street. Meanwhile, the block from Rodd to McDonald and the McDonald and Main intersection are now open to vehicle traffic. Visitors to the Midland Area Farmers Market should now utilize Rodd or McDonald Streets.

Weather and other factors permitting, at least one block of Phase 1 will be complete by the end of this month.

Read the anticipated schedule below for all the details!

Rodd to McDonald:

  • Roadway surface has been paved is now open to vehicle traffic
  • Intersection of Main and McDonald is now open to vehicle traffic
    • Note: We anticipate intermittent lane closures as needed for ongoing work.
  • Sidewalk details (including power washing, seam caulking, and adding temporary parking barrels and protective elements to planters) will begin July 24
    • Note: Sidewalks will be closed to pedestrians overnight through mid-morning for 6-8 hours to finalize caulking work. A separate announcement will be made when this occurs.
  • Block is anticipated to open for parking and both vehicle and pedestrian traffic by July 28

McDonald to Ashman:

  • Paving anticipated by July 28
  • Intersection of Main and Ashman is anticipated to re-open on July 28
  • Sidewalk details (including power washing, seam caulking, and adding temporary parking barrels and protective elements to planters) will begin July 31
    • Note: Sidewalks will be closed to pedestrians overnight through mid-morning for 6-8 hours to finalize caulking work.

Ashman to Gordon:

  • Paving anticipated by August 4 

Gordon to Fitzhugh:

  • Block is now closed to traffic as of July 21
  • Milling completed July 22
  • Tree removal will begin on July 24
  • Sidewalks closed on both sides for brick removal
    • Note: These sidewalks are anticipated to remain closed until new walkways are poured in a few weeks.

Fitzhugh to M-20:

  • Block anticipated to close to vehicle traffic after Main is opened from McDonald to Ashman
    • Note: When this block closes, motorists accessing M-20 are highly encouraged to use Rodd Street to Indian Street to Jerome Street to access M-20. Motorists using Larkin Street to access M-20 will experience long wait times. 

June 30, 2017: Four-Weeks-In Construction Update! 

As the fourth week of construction comes to an end, we’ve compiled a list of work that’s been done – and what’s to come – on the Dig In Midland streetscape project.

Rodd to McDonald Block: 

  • Sidewalks are open and substantially completed on both sides;
  • Curbing for the intersections will be completed by end of this week;
  • Gravel being laid in preparation for paving;
  • Paving anticipated for July 17-18, followed by parking space striping. After this, both the street and parking will be reopened.
    • We anticipate intermittent closure of some parking spaces for ongoing work in this block.
  • Intersection of Main and McDonald is anticipated to open after July 18

McDonald to Ashman:

  • Sidewalks are open and substantially complete on both sides;
  • Intersection curbing is underway;
  • Paving anticipated for July 17-18, followed by parking space striping. After this, both the street and parking will be reopened.
    • We anticipate intermittent closure of some parking spaces for ongoing work in this block.
  • Intersection of Main and Ashman will be closed on Friday, June 30 for mill work.  It is anticipated this intersection will be re-opened for the Independence Day holiday (7/1-7/4) and then closed again beginning July 5.
  • McDonald Street from Larkin to Ann Street is anticipated to open July 19

Ashman to Gordon:

  • Ashman to Gordon block milled Friday, June 30
  • Ashman milled Main Street to Ann Street, Friday, June 30
  • Ashman Street Sidewalk work, Main Street to Ann Street (east side only) June 30 – July 17
  • Ashman Street closes Larkin to Ann Street WednesdayJuly 5
    • Please use Gordon and Rodd Street for Farmers Market access
  • Demolition of sidewalks to begin Wednesday, July 5
  • Work in this block is anticipated to be completed the week of July 31

Gordon to Fitzhugh

  • Milling Gordon to Fitzhugh – July 20 

Fitzhugh to M20

  • Milling Fitzhugh to Jerome (M-20) – August 1
